Description
This series of images presents a view of a unique looking bird with a curved beak, identified as a Bendire’s Thasher, which is a bird of the deserts of the southwestern United States. Although we live in Pueblo, we don’t live in the desert and this Thrasher and her mate have inhabited our yard for several years. They produced three chicks this year which have kept them very busy looking out for their safety and to keep them well fed.
I witnessed the Thrasher defend and protect its young from a potential predator one day. A large colorful snake, about 8 feet long, was secluded in a bush near which the three Thrasher chicks were waiting to be fed. It was amazing to watch that Thrasher first lift its wings to attract the snake’s attention and then begin hammering the snake’s body with its long curved beak. That snake couldn’t wait to get away from the Thrasher.
