Description
You immediately feel immersed in this early Spring scene at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge as you watch the Sandhill Cranes fly by with Mount Blanca providing a spectacular background.
At 14,351 feet, Blanca Peak is Colorado’s fourth highest peak and the highest summit of the Sierra Blanca Massif, the Sangre de Cristo Range, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
It is one of two Navajo sacred mountains located in the Sangre de Cristos and the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. Blanca Peak is known to the Navajo people as the “Sacred Mountain of the East” or the Dawn or White Shell Mountain. The mountain is considered to be the eastern boundary of the Dineh Bikeyah, the traditional Navajo homeland.
